The Swedish Gambling Authority, Spelinspektionen, has banned Immortal Snail LLC from targeting gambling at Sweden, in a decision announced on October 28. The company runs crypto casino Duel, which according to reports is licensed in Anjouan and holds no Swedish license.
The ban means Immortal Snail may not offer gambling in Sweden without a license from the regulator.
What the regulator found
Spelinspektionen's checks showed that "the IP blocking against Sweden has not been implemented," according to the decision as cited by SBC News. An IP block turns visitors away based on the country their internet address traces to, though VPN users can get around it.
The Swedish currency SEK and Swedish as a language still appear when logging in from a Swedish IP address
The regulator also pointed to ongoing Swedish-language marketing of duel.com.
Duel puts the block on Sweden
In a written response to the regulator, Immortal Snail said it "should not cease offering Swedish as a language on the website," arguing that "Swedish is an international language." It said Sweden itself "should be IP-blocked" and that it cannot control players paying in Swedish kronor.
In our reading, the operator is handing the job of keeping Swedes out back to Sweden, while the regulator treats the language, currency and marketing as evidence that Duel is aimed at Swedish players.
According to reports, the public notice names no fine and no deadline. It is not clear whether Spelinspektionen will act further if Swedish and SEK stay on the site.
