Novig has announced the nationwide launch of its sports prediction market, making its platform available across the United States under federal regulatory oversight.
The expansion follows the company's approval as a Designated Contract Market (DCM) by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), allowing it to list sports event contracts under a federal framework rather than obtaining sportsbook licenses on a state-by-state basis.
A Different Model to Traditional Sports Betting
Novig's platform is structured as a peer-to-peer marketplace instead of a conventional sportsbook. Rather than placing wagers against a bookmaker, users trade positions with one another, with prices determined by supply and demand within the market.
The company argues this structure reduces the costs typically associated with sportsbook margins while giving users the ability to enter or exit positions as market prices change.
The nationwide launch also introduces several updates to the platform, including support for live event trading, additional payment options, and improvements aimed at increasing liquidity and order execution speeds.
Growth Beyond Its Initial Rollout
According to Novig, the platform has processed more than $6 billion in trading volume since launch, reflecting growing interest in sports prediction markets as an alternative to traditional wagering.
Chief Executive Officer Jacob Fortinsky said the national expansion represents a major milestone for the company, adding that Novig's goal is to provide a more efficient market for sports fans by allowing participants to trade directly with one another instead of betting against the house.
Prediction Markets Continue to Expand
Novig joins a growing number of companies operating sports prediction markets in the United States, a sector that has gained momentum over the past two years. Unlike licensed sportsbooks, these platforms operate under federal commodities regulation, creating an alternative framework for sports event trading.
The category has attracted increasing attention from both regulators and the wider sports industry, with prediction market operators continuing to secure partnerships and expand their product offerings.
Legal Debate Continues
While Novig's federal approval enables its nationwide launch, the broader legal status of sports prediction markets remains under scrutiny.
Several states have questioned whether sports event contracts should instead fall under state gambling laws, setting up an ongoing legal debate over the division of authority between federal commodities regulators and state gaming regulators.
As that debate continues, Novig's nationwide rollout marks another significant development in the rapidly evolving prediction market industry and further blurs the line between financial trading platforms and traditional sports betting.
